We tend to think that famous people lead perfect lives, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. They are not immune to emotional struggles and life’s challenges and they aren’t exempt from mental health issues, either. Some are more private about their mental health, while others strive to raise awareness in hopes of debunking misconceptions about disorders.
Some stars had to learn how to control their mental problems in order to make it big in Hollywood. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental disorders are common in the US and affect tens of millions of people each year, regardless of age, gender or race.

Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham is best known for writing, directing, producing and acting in Girls, the original series she created for HBO. She has long been outspoken about her experience living with the obsessive-compulsive disorder. She even wrote a piece for The New Yorker in 2014 outlining her experiences growing up with the condition, and what it was like to receive therapy.
Lena says that she managed to gain control of her OCD symptoms by high school but that she had to take massive doses of antidepressants. “I was so exhausted all the time and had night sweats”- talking about her OCD symptoms during adolescence for Rolling Stone magazine.
